The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has issued a Circular dated 13 October 2026 extending the due date for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and remittance of statutory PF contributions for the wage month of September 2026.
The extension has been provided considering the operational and technical challenges faced by establishments following the revision of the PF wage ceiling effective from 17 September 2026, which required corresponding changes in payroll systems, PF contribution calculations and statutory compliance processes.
| Key Clarification | |
| Particulars | Position |
| Wage Month | Sep-26 |
| Earlier Due Date | 15-Oct-26 |
| Extended Due Date | 31-Oct-26 |
| ECR Filing | Permitted up to 31 October 2026 |
| PF Contribution Remittance | Permitted up to 31 October 2026 |
| Applicability | Only for September 2026 wage month |
EPFO has specifically clarified that the extension is restricted exclusively to filing the September 2026 ECR and remittance of the corresponding statutory contributions. It should not be treated as a general extension of statutory timelines for any other wage month or as a waiver of any other statutory obligation.
Considering the above, establishments that are still in the process of completing the revised September 2026 PF calculations/ECR should utilise the extended timeline and ensure that:
- The revised PF wage ceiling applicable from 17 September 2026 is appropriately considered in the September 2026 computation.
- The September 2026 ECR is validated against the final payroll records.
- The ECR is filed and the corresponding PF contributions are remitted on or before 31 October 2026.
The EPFO Circular is dated 13 October 2026 and has been issued with the approval of the Central Provident Fund Commissioner.
