The Government of Telangana has issued an exemption under the Telangana Shops and Establishments Act, 1988 to promote Ease of Doing Business. The exemption applies to all commercial establishments (excluding shops) as defined under Section 2(5) of the Act, allowing them to adopt extended daily working hours.
Key Provisions:
- Applicability: All commercial establishments (other than shops) in Telangana.
- Exemption: These establishments are exempt from Sections 16 and 17 of the Act.
- Section 16 pertains to the daily and weekly working hour limits, which normally restrict employees to 8 hours per day and 48 hours per week.
- Section 17 mandates a rest interval of at least one hour after 5 hours of continuous work.
- New Working Hour Norms:
- Daily working hours can extend up to 10 hours.
- Weekly working hours limited to 48 hours.
- Overtime wages are to be paid for work beyond 48 hours per week.
- Other Conditions:
- Rest Interval: Employees cannot work more than 6 hours without a 30-minute break.
- Work Spread: Total spread of working hours including rest shall not exceed 12 hours per day.
- Overtime Limit: Overtime capped at 144 hours per quarter (i.e., 3 months).
- Non-compliance: Any violation will lead to revocation of exemption without prior notice.

From the date of publication in the Telangana Gazette (scheduled for 08.07.2025).
