Implementation of Revised Definitions under the Code on Social Security, 2020 – ESI

ESIC circular (File No. N-11011/2/2025-BFT-II dated 28-11-2025) issued pursuant to Gazette Notification No. 5143 dated 21.11.2025, through which the Code on Social Security, 2020 has come into force with effect from 21-11-2025.

Revision in Definition of “Dependant” (Section 2(24))

The following relations have now been included under the definition of dependant:

  • Widower
  • Grandparent  

Revision in Definition of “Family” (Section 2(33))

The following relations have now been included under the definition of family:

  • Father-in-law
  • Mother-in-law (of a woman employee)

Accordingly, they are entitled for Medical Benefit.
